The Monaco Masters Show: Chagall & Léger, color and form

04.07.2025 - 31.08.2025

Under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, Opera Gallery is pleased to present The Monaco Masters Show : Chagall & Léger, la couleur et la forme a masters exhibition with a special focus on Marc Chagall (1887-1985) and Fernand Léger (1881-1955).

With 2025 marking the 40th anniversary of Chagall’s death and 70th anniversary of Léger’s death, this exhibition explores the parallel experiences and respective influences of both masters. Using colour to underscore their distinctive approaches to modernism, their works can be seen as a celebration of humanity’s enduring spirit – with Léger taking an idealistic view to the collective-framing, the human figure as an intrinsic component of the modern, technological world – Chagall’s work embracing tradition and symbolism, taking a more mystical lens to personal narratives in his paintings.

Additionally, the exhibition will feature a wider presentation of nearly thirty 20th and 21st century masterworks from artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fernando Botero, George Condo, Jean Dubuffet, Keith Haring, Alex Katz, Yayoi Kusama, Roy Lichtenstein, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Soulages, Manolo Valdés, Andy Warhol among others.

The Monaco Masters Show: The Côte d’Azur, land of inspiration

From July 3 to August 31, 2024

Opera Gallery is pleased to present “Monaco Masters Show: The Côte d’Azur, Land of Inspiration”, a group exhibition featuring a wide range of 20th and 21st century artists who lived and worked on the Côte d’Azur, including Karel Appel, Fernando Botero, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, George Condo, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hartung, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso and Jean-Paul Riopelle.

The works on display, with their diversity of styles, media and subjects, testify to the region’s ability to arouse the emotions and imaginations of all, stimulating creativity in a multitude of forms. Throughout history, the culture, climate and unique clarity of light found on the Côte d’Azur have served as a creative motivation for artists. For many, the region served as a place of pilgrimage, offering the chance to escape the trappings of metropolitan life. The Mediterranean Sea continues to attract artists in search of refuge and renewal, who inevitably return changed by the region’s unique energy.
