EXHIBITIONChagall, Rêves de couleur - a selection of works on paper3 July to 15 September

Sotheby’s Monaco hosts a solo private selling exhibition of 21 resplendent works of art by Marc Chagall, shining a spotlight on the artist’s last three decades spent in the South of France.

The Mediterranean light captivated Marc Chagall as soon as he arrived in Vence in 1949, before settling permanently in Saint-Paul de Vence from 1966 to 1985. This group of twenty-one works showcases marvelously the artist’s keen interest in
storytelling and lyricism. His favorite themes are beautifully exemplified here, with the central figure of the embracing couple, the presence of evanescent bouquets
of flowers, and the occasional appearance of the moon and the donkey. The
collection offered will also emphasize the presence of light in Chagall’s works. Indeed, the
richness of the chromatic palette which visitors will be able to witness in Monaco is
undeniable proof of the artist’s extraordinary experimentations with colour, which singled him out from his contemporaries. As Pablo Picasso declared in 1954: « After Matisse [...], Chagall will be the only painter to understand what colour really is ».
