"Powder and Light" presents a comparison between diverse artistic practices employed by artists working in Italy who share certain common denominators: “powders” of various kinds, the idea of the trick or illusion, a reflection on time and history (personal, everyday or artistic).
Andrea Francolino (1979) uses cement, glass and gold leaf to reflect on the vulnerability of existence and human activity while the pure powdered pigment of Sophie Ko (1981) becomes an emblem of the on-going metamorphosis of matter and of the concept of “making art”. The coloured works by Serena Vestrucci (1986), realised with eyeshadows, are landscape views, “cosmetically altered canvasses”, ironic magical entities like the reflective surfaces of the duo Goldschmied & Chiari (1975; 1971) who incorporate nebulous images of multi-coloured smoke bombs.
In all these strands of research “light” is a fundamental element.
